The Spring 2014 “Muse” collection was Johanna Johnson’s runway debut on the 2013 New York Bridal Market but even a casual observer could see that she was no newbie to the scene. While Gatsby fever is still running high in bridal circles (thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby earlier this year), it is not merely a passing fad in Johanna Johnson’s sketchbooks. Having consistently churned out dresses that speak of a style from a glamorous bygone era for years, it is her forte and one she does with great finesse.
For this collection, the Australian designer took unforgettable elements of Art Deco New York and incorporated strong architectural influences and decadent ornamentation into slinky bias-cut sheaths in an intoxicating mix of opulent style and splendid elegance. Chains of crystals drape shoulders and backs in dramatic fashion. Some dresses are entirely festooned with laving beading. We love the structured metallic numbers and ombre effect on some of the dresses but the quietly glamorous seamed silk gowns are what stole our hearts. It’s all about the cut and execution here, and this is one designer who does them both so well. Enjoy the show!
